SharePoint 2007 Design Tip: Gantt View with custom master pages

I recently discovered that your custom master page may affect the Gantt view of a SharePoint list.  I have seen the colored task bars extend past the framed container of the chart when a custom master page and CSS is applied to the site.  If this happens to you, you can try the following:

  • Systematically strip out the CSS and HTML to identify what code is causing the problem. Be sure to make backups of your files first.
  • Adjust the DOCTYPE tag that you are using. When this happened to me, I had to go way back and use the following DOCTYPE to get the Gantt view to show correctly:  <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN”>

And finally, add this on to your list of items to test while developing custom master pages for SharePoint!

  1. Heather, I would never downgrade the already low DOCTYPE in the SP master page. If anything I would push it to XHTML 1.0 and debug there. The 3.2 spec is a decade old.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing! Had the same problem over here but after changing the doctype it work like a charm. spent hours to check my css and masterpage-code …

  3. Hi Heather,I come across this myself and for me the culprit was the wrapper div (I think the class was ms-ganttView or something similar) that was being absolutely positioned. Changing this back to static seemed to fix it so hopefully that helps someone else too.

  4. My comment got erased maybe. I would never downgrade your DOCTYPE especially since that one is over a decade old. Instead I would actually upgrade your DOCTYPE to a XHTML one and debug there. It will be far more future-proof.

  5. Hey Heather,Great trick, unless the customer has a requirement for a specific doctype.Speaking of Gantt views – keep an eye out in my blog for an upcoming Gantt Web Part you can use to “replace” the boring SharePoint Gantt view with :-)Z

  6. Heather,I have installed wss 3.0 and will be making a custom theme. However notice some extra themes in the themes are the “extra” folders i see…CENTRLADCLUBFRESHSPSKY…What I notice is that if you enable these theme in the spthemes.xml file, the Club/Fresh theme look like and unfinished themes, while the other two folders look like finished theme.Do you know why these arew there?

  7. We are using the below DOCTYPE in our master page and designed all our custom page layouts on basis of this. Due to this the GANTT CHART was not displaying within the frame either in webpart nor in list view. Could you pls advice the solutions to it.Also i noticed that GANTT CHART was not displaying properly (behaving exactly the same way like in our custom master) with OOTB BlueBand.master page<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “”>
